From the Pastor’s Study
In January’s LINK I shared with you about little “miracles” in our Christmas season - an amazing attendance for our Christmas Play, a very generous contribution to our Capital campaign. On January 12th, when an earthquake devastated Haiti, the need for miracles on a scale that is almost unimaginable became clear. We all have been touched deeply by the reports, the pictures and video of suffering and destruction so profound that the recovery task is already being discussed as a ten-year plan. Some say that that is optimistic. This congregation has responded to the call for help. We have designated $1750 of our annual discretionary benevolence to go to Lutheran World Relief. In offerings during worship on January 17th and 24th we have raised an additional $1320. On February 7th, our Souper Bowl of Caring collection will benefit LWR. These monetary gifts are essential… but they can sometimes leave us feeling as if we need to do something physical, tangible, to aid our brothers and sisters in need. Lutheran World Relief has put out an urgent call for Health Kits. People who must flee their homes quickly often do not have time to pack essential items. Health kits can help earthquake refugees maintain personal hygiene while living in temporary shelters. Items may also contribute to a new start for those who can return home. If you would like to create a Health Kit, follow the instruction below and bring it to the church anytime. Please hold the people of Haiti, and those who labor heroically in the recovery effort, in your prayers. Pastor Parsons Include the following items in each health kit: + One hand towel, dark color recommended Do not add other items or leave out any of the items listed. All items should be new and in good condition. Wrap smaller items in the washcloth; wrap washcloth and remaining items in the towel and tie securely with ribbons or yarn. Do not enclose the kit or any of its contents in plastic bags. Please do not donate items with any religious symbols, messages or with your congregation’s name. Please do not donate any items decorated with a U.S. flag, patriotic or military symbols, or references to the armed forces, including camouflage. LWR and its overseas partners have access to areas of the world others do not because they are impartial, humanitarian organizations. If their intentions are misinterpreted as being religiously or politically motivated, their work, their partners and the people they assist could be endangered.
